How to Prepare Your CEO for a Video Interview: A Producer's Guide

Most CEOs are exceptional in a room. They know their business, they read people well, and they communicate with authority. But put a camera in front of them and something shifts — they stiffen, they over-explain, they sound like they're delivering a speech instead of having a conversation.
This is completely normal — and completely fixable. Here's how we prepare executives for video interviews at H Billi Media.
1. Brief Them on the Questions in Advance — But Don't Script Them
Share the interview questions beforehand so your CEO has time to think through their answers. But do not let them write a script word-for-word. Scripted answers sound scripted on camera — the viewer can always tell. Instead, encourage them to think in themes and stories, not sentences.
2. Wear Solid Colors and Avoid Patterns
Fine patterns like herringbone and small checks create a visual moiré effect on camera that distracts the viewer. Solid colors — navy, charcoal, white, burgundy — photograph cleanly and keep the attention on the face and the words, which is exactly where you want it.
3. Talk to the Interviewer, Not the Camera
The most common mistake first-time interview subjects make is staring at the camera lens. It creates an unnatural, almost confrontational feeling. Instead, look directly at the interviewer as if you're having a normal conversation. The camera captures that natural eye contact and the result looks far more authentic.
4. Slow Down — Much More Than Feels Natural
Nervous energy makes people speak faster. On camera, fast speech reads as anxious and hard to follow. Encourage your CEO to deliberately slow their pace — it will feel strange to them in the moment, but on playback it will sound authoritative and controlled. Pause between thoughts. Let ideas breathe.
5. Do a Warm-Up Round Before the Real Take
At H Billi Media, we always run a warm-up conversation before we shoot anything that counts. We ask easy questions, get the subject comfortable, and let them get used to the lights and cameras. By the time we're rolling on the real interview, the nerves are gone and the natural personality comes through.
