What to Wear for a Corporate Video Shoot: A Producer's Guide

Most executives don't think about wardrobe until the morning of their video shoot — and by then, it's too late. What you wear on camera affects how you're perceived in ways most people underestimate. The right wardrobe choices can make a CEO look composed and credible. The wrong ones can pull the viewer's attention away from every word being said.

After producing executive interview video for professionals across the South Bay and Los Angeles, here's what we tell every client before they show up to set.

Stick to Solid Colors That Hold Up on Camera

Solid, mid-tone colors are the safest choice for video. Navy blue, charcoal gray, deep burgundy, forest green, and muted earth tones all photograph beautifully under professional lighting. They give the image depth without distracting the eye.

Avoid pure white and pure black. Pure white blows out under lights and gives the camera nothing to grip. Pure black flattens the image and steals detail from your face. If you want to wear a white shirt, layer a jacket or blazer over it so the white isn't the dominant element on screen.

Avoid Patterns That Distort the Image

Tight patterns — pinstripes, herringbone, small checks, dense paisley — create what's called a moire effect on camera. The pattern starts to vibrate and shimmer, pulling focus from your face. It looks unprofessional, and it's almost impossible to fix in post.

Solid fabrics are always the right call. If you want texture, choose something with a slight weave that reads as material, not as pattern.

Dress for Your Audience, Not for Trends

The wardrobe should match how you'd actually show up to meet your most important client. A managing partner at a law firm should wear a suit. A tech founder pitching enterprise clients should wear a sharp jacket and dress shirt. A wellness practitioner should look approachable, not corporate.

The point isn't to wear what's fashionable — it's to wear what tells the right story about you and your business. When in doubt, dress one notch above your audience. Authority on camera comes from looking intentional, not casual.

A Few Practical Details Most People Forget

Bring a backup. Stains happen, lighting changes, and sometimes a color you loved in the mirror doesn't read on camera. Having a second option saves the day.

Steam everything. Wrinkles look ten times worse on camera than they do in person. A travel steamer in your office before the shoot is one of the highest-ROI moves you can make.

Watch your collar and tie. Crooked collars and uneven knots are the most common things we fix on set — and the most preventable.

Skip the busy jewelry. A simple watch and a wedding band are fine. Anything that catches the light or reflects oddly will compete with your face on screen.
