How to Prepare Your CEO for a Video Interview: A Producer's Guide

Most CEOs are brilliant in a room. They command attention, read the room, and know exactly what to say. Then someone puts a camera in front of them and everything changes. The confidence disappears. The words come out stiff. They look like they're being deposed, not telling their story.

This happens to almost everyone. The camera is unnatural. It gives no feedback. And most executives have had zero training for it. Here's how we prepare every CEO and executive we work with before we roll.

1. Know Your Three Core Messages Before You Arrive

You don't need a script. Scripts make people sound like robots. But you do need clarity on the three things you want the viewer to walk away knowing. Write them down. Practice saying them out loud in casual conversation — not in boardroom language. The camera rewards natural speech, not corporate speak.

2. Dress for the Camera, Not the Office

Solid colors read better than patterns on camera. Avoid bright white — it blows out under lights. Navy, charcoal, burgundy, and earth tones all work beautifully. If you wear glasses, come prepared for potential glare — we'll address it on set. Dress one level above how you'd normally appear in the office.

3. Slow Down and Breathe

The biggest on-camera mistake executives make is rushing. When you're nervous, you speak faster than normal. The camera compresses time, so fast speech reads as anxious. Deliberately slow down. Pause between sentences. Let your thoughts land. Silence on camera is confidence — not weakness.

4. Talk to the Interviewer, Not the Camera

In an interview-style shoot, you're talking to a person — not staring into a lens. Keep your eyes on the interviewer. Let the conversation feel real. We position our cameras so that natural eye contact with the interviewer reads perfectly on every angle. You don't have to perform for the camera. Just talk to us.

5. Trust the Process — We'll Get It

Every executive we've worked with has started the day nervous and ended it surprised by how good they looked. On-camera coaching is part of every shoot we do. We work with your CEO before we ever press record — on pacing, posture, storytelling, and natural delivery. By the time we're rolling, they're ready.
